Event Details:
All participants on adventure shoots organized by Hidden West and Mangai Rollin must understand and agree to the following to reserve their spot and join the adventure.

1. Best Self: These are intimate, small group adventures. It is critical that each individual bring their best self to the group and expect to participate equally. We take this VERY SERIOUSLY and work hard to ensure that each participant will be fun to have along for the adventure.
1a. No discussion of politics or religion: This is meant to be a vacation, an escape from reality. Leave your opinions at home. No one wants to hear them.

2. Sound Mind and Body: Each individual must be physically healthy and in a positive state of mind. If you question your health or state of mind, than please consider joining us at a later date.

3. Mechanically Sound Vehicle: Each vehicle must be up to date on maintenance and be cleared for a 4k+ mile road trip from its mechanic. We will be driving some rough roads and do not want a vehicle with a known previous condition to be the weak link.

4. Appropriate Gear: tires, air compressor, off-road extraction gear and communications gear. If you do not already possess all of this gear, there will be group discussion posts with links provided on each topic. ...or you can visit our gear links page for a list of the gear we use: https://www.mangai-rollin.com/gear
We have discounts available with some gear mfrs and will share them with the group when possible.
4a. Tires: Five matching AT tires with 50% or greater tread is considered the minimum. We often get flat tires in Baja.
4b. Tire tools: Tire repair kit and deflation / inflation tools so that you can take care of your vehicle’s needs without relying on others. Onboard air is preferred but a high quality portable compressor is fine.
4c. Recovery points F&R, shovel, traction boards and a kinetic strap are the minimum extraction equipment. Winches are preferred.
4d. GMRS / HAM radios. Hard mounted units preferred. Hi-powered handheld radios accepted.

5.Trip Fees:
5a. Full trip: $2750 round-trip, per person.
5b. One-way passenger only: $1300 + $200 in gas money to the driver of the vehicle you ride in.
5c. One-way driver: $1500. Some participants are choosing to drive one direction and then fly out while a friend flies in and drives their vehicle on the return leg.
5d. Fly and Drive: $2750 RT PP / $1500 OW PP. Some participants are flying into San Diego or Loreto and either picking up a rental or riding shotgun with a solo driver. See sections 6 & 7 below.
5e. Trip fees include: route planning, guide services, camping fees, whale boat tour, two group restaurant meals, cost of ingredients for two group meals on the beach, mordida (see below) avoidance strategy session and convoy placards.
5f. These fees exclude: fuel, cost of hotels (2-3) depending on which travel option you choose (cost added to balance due on 01.15, MX vehicle insurance, Personal Evacuation Insurance, FMM visa, airfare (where applicable), rental vehicles (where applicable), food for personal breakfasts / lunch / dinners, ingredients for two group meals prepared by your vehicle (each rig is responsible for cooking for the group twice).
5g. Submit 50% non-refundable deposit by ASAP to hold your spot; submit 50% balance by 01.15.

6. Fly and drive option: Every so often, we change up the route to accommodate folks who don't have the luxury of taking three weeks off from work and create an option that allows people to rent a rig and join us for one leg of the trip. This year, their will be a Southbound option and a Northbound option. ...and we've added an 11 day short loop option for folks who want to fly in and out of Loreto and join us as we pass through. These experiences will all differ subtlety (beaches, restaurants, camp spots, off-road trails). If you are interested in this, the fees are less ($1200 PP), but you have to factor in the costs of airfare and a vehicle rental. Rentals are also available for those that wish to fly in and out of San Diego and do the complete trip.
6a. Southbound - Fly into Palm Springs on 03.12; Fly out of Loreto on 3.23.
6b. Northbound - Fly into Loreto on 03.22; Fly out of Palm Springs or San Diego on 4.01.

7. Rentals: We have three capable Toyota Land Cruisers (LC100s and FJ80) for rent through our partners at the Baja Cruisers club or through third-party overland vehicle rental agencies. Costs are $2250 a week and include MX insurance. All rental vehicles must meet minimum vehicle requirements of sections 3 & 4 above. Additional rentals are available through numerous overlanding rental agencies but they are substantially more expensive.

8. Pesos / Credit Cards: We recommend ordering $200-$250 in pesos from your bank ahead of the trip. We will stop at bank ATMs at key locations throughout the trip. We typically pay for fuel and groceries at larger stores with credit cards, and for meals at smaller places with pesos. Always have enough pesos on hand to pay for a full tank of fuel should the internet be down at the gas station (this happens occasionally).

9. Mordida: The word mordida literally translates to "little bites." It is the longstanding practice of corrupt policemen stopping you with bogus claims of an infraction and the "offer" to let you pay the fine on the spot rather than taking the time to go to the police station. It is a federal crime in Mexico to hand a policeman money. After experiencing a mordida stop ourselves, we have researched the issue and put together a strategy and kit to employ before, during and after a mordida encounter. Learning more about this topic will enable you to travel with confidence in MX.

10. Cooking: We believe strongly in the benefits of working together. Each night, the occupants of a different vehicle cook dinner for the group and everyone eats together. Usually, others in the group volunteer to assist with prep and/or cleaning if needed. Participants are encouraged to bring their A-game, plan out their best camping meal and add it to the event spreadsheet. Each meal's ingredients will be reviewed and we will provide guidance on where ingredients are best procured S of the border.

11. Children and Dogs: These are adult-oriented adventures. Children below the age of 18 are not allowed. Mature young adults 18-21 are allowed provided that they can handle the pace and will be considered an asset to the group's experience. Friendly dogs are welcomed and considered a benefit, but be aware that we will be in the desert. We see rattlesnakes and scorpions on every trip. It is the responsibility of the dog's owner to keep them safe.

12. Snakebites: Rattlesnakes and scorpions are all over the Baja peninsula. Walk Loud and NEVER reach under rocks without kicking them over and inspecting them first. "Snakebite kits" do NOT work. Rattlesnake antivenom is expensive and has a short enough shelf life that many hospitals do not stock it. Because of this reason, some travelers in Baja purchase their own vials of antivenom from pharmacies and carry it with them. If you feel this is important to you to have on hand, we can point you in the right direction.

13. Emergency Protocols: We work hard to plan ahead and act responsibly in the moment but accidents do happen. We carry emergency satellite communication devices to be able to call for help when out of cellular signals.
13a. Disabled vehicles: In the event of a mechanical problem, we have arranged for recovery services to assist us in recovering and trailering a disabled vehicle.
13b. Disabled humans: In the event of a car accident, fall, snakebite, etc, an ambulance would be summoned and the disabled person would be transferred to the nearest hospital. Should that person need treatment beyond the capabilities of that hospital, they may need an air transfer to the nearest US hospital in San Diego. It is up to you to decide on and be comfortable with your own level of risk and whether you want to purchase your own medical evacuation insurance.

14. Paperwork:
14a. Current Passport: Possess a current passport by 01.15.
14b. Visa: The group will stop at the INM office at the border and purchase a FMM Tourist Visa (~$35).
14c. Current Prescriptions: If you take prescription drugs and will have them with you, it is a good idea to be in possession of a current prescription. We have never been asked for this, but it is discussed as a required item on the CBP website. https://help.cbp.gov/s/article/Article-1160
14d. Dog owners: Please read the following article. Again, we have never been asked for this but you should be aware of the posted requirements. https://www.discoverbaja.com/go/traveling-pets/

15. Insurance:
15a. Current MX Vehicle Insurance: All US plated vehicles in Mexico must have current US insurance AND MX trip insurance. We use Ride Baja Insurance (https://ridebaja.com/). Make sure to let them know you are joining a Hidden West adventure.
15b. Emergency Evac Insurance. Emergency Evac and Repatriation can cost $25k-$60k+. It's expensive! This insurance is less than $100 USD for a two-week trip. We us CAP Travel. https://www.captravelassistance.com/

16. Adventure Shoots: On occasion, our parent company Mangai Rollin uses these adventures as a working content shoot to capture enthusiasts authentically using relevant products in the field. We also document the trip as a whole and put together edited photo albums / videos that will be shared on social media. We work hard to capture content organically and not interrupt the flow of the experience. If you have any questions or concerns, please address them ahead of submitting your deposit. You will be asked to wet-sign a model release form. A good example of this is the Snow Peak shoot during the Feb '21 adventure: https://mangairollin.pixieset.com/bajaadviv/

17. Liability Waiver: You will be expected to act as an adult and be responsible for your own actions. You will wet-sign a waiver indemnifying Hidden West, Mangai Rollin and all employees and subcontractors from all liability should you get yourself into trouble, harm yourself or others.

18. Roster: Marking yourself as 'going' on Facebook is only the first step. You must meet all the criteria above to be invited to join the roster. The group size is limited to ten vehicles. If you have read this far and are still interested in joining us, introduce yourself via email (info [at] hidden-west.com), DM or text and let's chat. We will want to know a bit about you, your experience level in overland adventures and off-road driving, and the condition and capabilities of your adventuremobile. We work hard to ensure that everyone has a good time together, and continues to "bring their best self." It is rare that we have to ask a client to leave a trip and this is largely because we work hard to get to know our clients ahead of time and make sure they will enjoy the adventure and the group.
